Aid Delivery in the Context of Conflict:
the current situation on the ground in Yemen
Shane Stevenson, Oxfam’s Country Director for Yemen
An already fragile and poor Yemen prior to the conflict, the country has now become the worst humanitarian situation in the world. Well-documented in UN publications, there are 17 million Yemenis struggling to cover their food needs. Seven million of them are at the risk of famine. Over 2,000 have died of cholera in the past five months and over 700,000 are suspected of having contracted the disease. The gravity of the humanitarian situation is directly linked to the on-going conflict. As such, Yemenis are unlikely to witness any improvement in the humanitarian situation in the near future, unless greater efforts towards a peaceful resolution are made.
Shane Stevenson is the Yemen Country Director for Oxfam and manages £25m of lifesaving humanitarian programming across the entire country. Shane has spoken at significant international events on Yemen during the past two years and will discuss the stark realities of the challenges to supporting the people of Yemen in the protracted crisis that is now in its third year. Shane has worked in the development sector for over eight years and has spoken publically on the immoral, illegal and incoherent approach of the international community in their engagement in Yemen.
