Exhibition ‘Buildings That Fill My Eye: the Architectural Heritage of Yemen’ Travels to Turin, Italy

The MBI Al Jaber Foundation’s exhibition, “Buildings That Fill My Eye: the architectural heritage of Yemen”, has recently moved to Turin, Italy. It was inaugurated at the Museo d’Arte Orientale (MAO) on 10th October by Emeritus Professor Trevor Marchand of SOAS, also curator of the exhibition, and will remain on display until 26th November. It is supported by SOAS, London Middle East Institute and the Istituto Veneto per i Beni Culturali, in collaboration with the MBI Al Jaber Foundation, Gingko and the British-Yemeni Society.

The launch of the exhibition, which was renamed in Italian “Dalla Terra al Cielo: un viaggio nell’archietettura dello Yemen”, was a public event and an introductory conference took place on 10th October. Professor Marchand gave a speech, followed by Renzo Ravagnan, Director of the Istituto Veneto per i Beni Culturali and Sabina Antonini de Maigret, Director of the Italian Archaeological Mission in the Republic of Yemen. They all shared their knowledge and experience of the Yemeni World Heritage sites.

As the museum itself states on its website, “Yemen has an amazing architectural heritage that is unparalleled: the ancient palaces of Sana‘a, Shibam and Zabid have all been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. This photographic exhibition illustrates the astonishing range of building styles and techniques that have been developed through the ages in a region characterised by great environmental and climatic diversity”.

The exhibition has just arrived in Italy but it is likely to travel to other destinations throughout the country. The following dates and venues are to be confirmed.
