MBI Al Jaber Foundation Supports Development of Post-Graduate Research Skills at San‘a’ University, Yemen

Supported by the MBI Al Jaber Foundation, Dr Mohamed Al-Haroni of UCL recently conducted a four day course on post-graduate research skills at the Faculty of Dentistry, Sana’a University, Yemen. Originally from Sana’a, Dr Al-Haroni now works in the department of microbial diseases in the UCL Eastman Dental Institute where he studies antibiotic resistance in bacteria.

Dr Al-Haroni proposed the course since contemporary teaching theories and studies have suggested that the process of teaching or teaching approach should be focused on the learning process itself rather than the content of teaching materials.

This approach increases the ability of students to gain knowledge by approaching problems and work in a larger frame of freedom to seek knowledge and solve complex problems. In the process of learning, students should gain generic skills that allow them to serve the society at best.

The Postgraduate Course in Research Methodology aimed to introduce a panel of transferable skills to course participants, including:
• Creative thinking, logistics, strategic planning and research management
• Analysis and interpretation of data
• Scientific writing
• Networking and team working

The course took place from the 19th to the 23rd of August 2013 and set a basis for attendees to start small-scale research projects.

Professor Abdulhakeem Al-Sharjabi, Head of Sana’a University, opened the four day course which was attended by twenty five faculty members, with a majority of women represented. The course was a great success, and Dr Al-Haroni is in talks with UCL and other academics with a view to expanding the programme next year.
