The MBI Al Jaber Foundation Sponsors the Professional Development of Young Academics in Yemen
Professional Development of Young Academics in Yemen
One of the aims of the Foundation, and that of our Chairman and Founder, Sheikh Mohamed Bin Issa Al Jaber, is to strengthen the existing education system in Yemen and its service delivery. Following the successful workshop ‘Research Tools and Methodology’ at Sana’a University during October 2013, the MBI Al Jaber Foundation was pleased to sponsor a second educational initiative organised and presented by Dr. Mohammed Al-Haroni.
Dr. Al-Haroni, Associate Professor at the Clinical Dentistry Department at UiT, the Arctic University of Norway and Honorary Lecturer at UCL, delivered several interactive workshops for young Yemeni academics at Sana’a University during December 2014. He discussed the necessary skills for modern and effective academic teaching in Yemen’s medical schools emphasising that those skills should be used to build a new and thriving generation of academic staff who would contribute to social mobility via improvement in higher education. The programme consisted of 3 professional development workshops enabling improvement in curriculum design, teaching and research. The young academics who attended were encouraged to reflect deeply on current medical teaching practices and how they might be refined.
Dr Al-Haroni’s project aimed at the provision of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) in medical education in Yemen. The CPD programme not only provided participants with the necessary skills required for curriculum design in medical education, but also enabled them to set a platform for wider educational reform in their own disciplines.
