Alumni news: Dr Ibrahim Natil’s Latest Publication on Civil Society’s Achievements in the MENA
The MBI Al Jaber Foundation is proud to announce the publication of our alumnus’, Dr Ibrahim Natil, latest work: ‘The Power of Civil Society in the Middle East and North Africa. Peace-building, Change, and Development’. The book was co-edited by Dr Natil, Lecturer in Politics and Business at Dublin City University, Chiara Pierobon, PhD candidate at Bielefeld University, and Lilian Tauber, Doctoral Research Student at Durham University.
The publication investigates the power of civil society in the MENA region in the context of the post-Arab Spring era, as well as more long-standing constraints in the region. Over the course of the book, the authors investigate how civil society has succeeded in achieving its objectives despite factors such as conservatism, conflict, violence and the restrictive political environment. Peace-building, development and change are at the core of the book and are discussed by taking into account the challenges faced by civil society organisations linked to ethnic, linguistic and cultural diversities, which are all crucial markers of social and political identity. The MBI Al Jaber Foundation is proud to have supported Dr Natil’s studies. He was awarded a scholarship, in 2001, enabling him to achieve his MA in Diplomatic Studies at Westminster University. He completed his PhD at Coventry University in 2011 and has taught politics and business studies at the Centre for Talented Youth Ireland, Dublin City University, since 2016. He is an international development consultant, is the founder of the Society Voice Foundation in Palestine and has worked for many international organisations, such as the UNDP and has also contributed to a World Bank project. He has launched and managed more than 56 human rights organisations that deal with women’s empowerment, peace building and good governance in Palestine.
